Review by Mike DeAngelo:
Against all odds, The Fast and the Furious franchise is somehow still speeding along. Not only that, each release seems simultaneously more popular and ridiculous than the last. The genius of the series is that it knows how absurd it is and plays to its strengths – action, humor, and heart. If you’re coming to the latest F&F franchise for a good plot or realism, you’re in the wrong theater.
In the first entry since the passing of Paul Walker, The Fate of the Furious pits the team against their leader…because why not? And while Paul’s presence is surely missed, the novelty of “The Gang V. Dom” plays entertainingly enough - even though many questions are never asked or answered. Again, you should know what to expect in the brains department here…
To no one’s surprise, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Jason Statham tend to steal the show whenever they’re on-screen. Thankfully, both are given a bigger role this time around…I smell spin-off.
Overall, The Fate of the Furious, like many other F&F movies, rides the line between dumb and charming surprisingly well. If you enjoyed the other films since the franchise was re-invented with Fast Five, this is, for better or worse, more of the same. It’s like candy – it tastes great going down, but is not healthy or nutritious in any way. Either way, sometimes you just want a handful of sugary goodness. You could do far worse (Transformers), and you could do far better (Marvel). Seeing as it made an unholy amount of money this weekend, I expect things to be very fast and very furious for many years to come…
